Red Rock Canyon: 17 Miles From the Strip

Red Rock Canyon: 17 Miles From the Strip

Thirty minutes from the Bellagio to sandstone walls 180 million years old. The transition from neon to geology feels like a magic trick the desert has been practicing.

The 13-mile Scenic Drive is a one-way loop, Aztec sandstone in reds, creams, and grays. Calico Tanks Trail is the pick — 2.5 miles round trip, moderate, climbing through a red-rock wash to a natural water tank with a view of the Las Vegas Valley: a bright human layer on a basin that's been desert for millions of years and will be long after the last casino closes.

November through March when temperatures drop below hostile and desert light goes golden. Summer starts at 110 and goes up — don't. Spring wildflower blooms after wet winters are spectacular. Arrive before nine on weekends; the gate closes when parking fills. $15 per vehicle.
