Calico Tanks: The Quiet Side of Red Rock

Calico Tanks: The Quiet Side of Red Rock

The Calico Tanks Trail is 2.5 miles round trip through a red sandstone wash to natural water basins carved into rock. The tanks collect rainwater and sit blue-green in shallow pools framed by cliffs the color of sunset peaches. From the top, Las Vegas sprawls in the distance like a glittering afterthought.

The trail starts through creosote and prickly pear, then rises along a shelf where the wind drums the ledges and carries sage. Switchbacks lead to a narrow staircase of rock that opens to the view. The contrast between ancient red canyon and the bright human layer in the valley below is the whole story of Vegas in one panorama.

Autumn and spring are ideal — gentle morning chill, comfortable afternoon warmth, golden-hour light that makes the canyon blush. Summer is a furnace. After rain the rocks appear freshly washed and the mineral colors intensify. Early arrival essential on weekends — the lot vanishes. Bring 2-3 liters of water, sturdy shoes for loose gravel, and sunscreen like you mean it.
